Southport FC 1 South Shields 0

Southport FC continued their remarkable rise under new manager Jim Bentley as a home win against South Shields propelled the Sandgrounders from the bottom of the table in September to just one point away from the National league North play-off positions.

After five penalties in five games against, it was our turn to get lucky with one in our favour this afternoon which Declan Evans coolly dispatched to earn all three points.

At the end of the day it’s the result that counts and whilst our visitors can count themselves unfortunate not to take anything from the game with 12 goal attempts it was another performance full of grit and determination, good goalkeeping and fine defending.

The penalty was awarded in the 52nd minute when Brad Holmes appeared to be tripped in the box.

Chances for the home side were few and far between with Jack Bainbridge having a header straight at the ‘keeper and Marcus Carver going close in added time.

A fantastic three points is what counts, which, on the back of four on our travels in the last seven days is a great return.
