Work In Progress, acrylic, by Abbie

The Sefton Young Artist of the Year 2024 is seeking entries.

It aims to showcase emerging talent in Sefton.

The Atkinson in Southport in partnership with The Arts Society Southport would like to invite young artists in high school, college or equivalent who live or go to school in Sefton to submit one piece of artwork to their competition.

Select one original artwork and carefully photograph it, then email your image and entry form to jemma.tynan@sefton.gov.uk by Friday 24th May 2024.

The foyer exhibition takes place at The Atkinson, on Lord Street in Southport Saturday 27th July 2024  –  Saturday 31st August 2024.

There will be an Online Exhibition: 1st June – 31sr August 2024
Winners will be announced on: 19th June 2024, with a Prize-giving Event on 27th July 2024.

The competition is for paintings, drawings, prints (not reproductions), photography, textiles, sculpture or mixed media. Or any form of artwork you can come up with. However, we do ask that colouring in outlines printed or drawn by someone else is not submitted. Adults may give encouragement but must not have a hands-on role in creating the artwork.

The Atkinson may reject entries that it considers are inappropriate for any reason. Only original works will be accepted or copies that are clearly referenced either in the image or through the title, e.g. People Inspired by L.S. Lowry.

All entries will be exhibited on The Atkinson’s website from Saturday 1 June 2024.

The artworks will be reviewed by a panel appointed by The Atkinson. All works are judged on individual merit and the judges’ decision is final. No correspondence or discussion will be entered into. Winners will be announced online on Wednesday 19 June 2024.

Winners will receive arts vouchers to be redeemed online and are invited to display their work in The Atkinson Foyer from Saturday 27 July 2024. Arrangements will be made to deliver artworks between Monday 22 & Wednesday 24 July. The prizes, donated by The Arts Society Southport, will be awarded at a Prizegiving Event at The Atkinson on Saturday 27 July 2024.

Helpful tips for photographing your artwork

  1. Remove the artwork from a frame if glazed – glass will create reflections in the artwork.
    2. Place your artwork on a neutral background – busy wallpaper and cluttered rooms to be avoided.
    3. Place your artwork in an area with natural lighting – near a window or outside on an overcast day.
    4. Position the camera so the screen is mostly filled with your artwork.
