School children from across Sefton are taking part in a #kNOwKnifeCrime relay race today (Wednesday, 17th April 2024).

Both primary and secondary schools will come together for this important community event, with over 1,680 children participating.

This symbolic initiative will see 20 children from each school running to the next, utilising the Knife Savers bleed control kit as the relay baton, covering a remarkable distance of 82 miles. The relay race aims to showcase a collective stand against knife crime while fundraising for vital bleed control equipment.

The relay race is part of the combined initiative – Sefton’s Schools Unites Against Knife Crime: #kNOwKnifeCrime Campaign, with an action-packed week.

The #kNOwKnifeCrime campaign, dedicated to combating youth knife crime, is leading a series of impactful events in Southport, Bootle, Formby, Crosby, Maghull and across Sefton, with the aim of raising awareness and funds to address this pressing issue.

From the 15th of April to the 21st of April, the campaign has the participation of primary and secondary schools across Sefton in the TCS Mini London Marathon in schools virtual event. Over 35,000 children are uniting to complete 2.6 miles throughout the week, with the goal of raising funds for the procurement and donation of Knife Saver bleed control kits to communities across the borough.

This Saturday (20th April 2024), 54 children from the Southport Learning Trust will represent the region in the TCS Mini London Marathon, further amplifying the message of solidarity against knife crime.

The campaign culminates this Sunday (21st April) with the participation of seven dedicated #kNOwKnifeCrime campaigners in the TCS London Marathon.

Two of these campaigners work within the participating schools, while Christina Greaves, the driving force behind the initiatives, will lead the charge.

Laura Hughes, sister of knife crime victim Colin McGinty and founder of #kNOwKnifeCrime, will also participate, emphasising the significance of the cause.

Laura Hughes said: “These events underscore our commitment to raising awareness and taking tangible action against knife crime.

“We are immensely grateful for the support and participation of everyone involved in making these initiatives a success.”
