Stephen Watson, Sefton Council’s Executive Director for Regeneration, Economy and Assets at Sefton Council, recently showcased the borough’s ambitious regeneration programme to an audience of developers, investors and local authority leaders from across the north of England.

Speaking at the Place North Revitalising our Town and City Centres conference in Manchester, Stephen Watson highlighted the transformational projects underway in both Southport and Bootle. And he described how Sefton is using these major investment schemes to support economic growth, attract visitors and improve opportunities for local communities.

A key focus of the presentation was the £100m-plus Marine Lake Events Centre in Southport, a flagship regeneration project that will strengthen the town’s visitor economy significantly and is already acting as a catalyst for further private sector investment to help drive growth across the wider area.

The venue, which is currently expected to open in 2029, is forecast to create hundreds of jobs, attract around 600,000 additional visitors each year and contribute more than £30 million annually to the local economy.

Watson also highlighted other major projects underway in Southport, including the restoration of Southport Pier and the new Southport Town Hall Gardens.

Delegates heard about the continuing transformation of the Strand in Bootle and the surrounding town centre. The project aims to reshape the heart of Bootle through new public spaces, improved connectivity, modern leisure and retail opportunities and investment that supports future growth.

Stephen Watson also highlighted the success of Salt and Tar, which has become an important cultural and events destination, bringing thousands of people into Bootle town centre and helping create new opportunities for businesses and visitors.

During the presentation, he explained that Sefton’s regeneration programme forms part of the Council’s wider Sefton 2030 vision. He said investment in infrastructure, town centres and visitor attractions is helping to create the conditions for future private sector investment and economic growth.

The presentation also highlighted the importance of partnership working, including support from the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority and national government, alongside a focus on delivering value through economic, social and environmental benefits.
