The R&A has today unveiled The Open Commitment, a new fan code of conduct that celebrates the unique atmosphere that has defined golf’s original Championship for more than 165 years.
The Open Commitment is built on five simple principles and encourages everyone attending to play their part in protecting the traditions which make The Open one of the world’s great sporting events.
As hundreds of thousands of fans prepare to attend The 154th Open at Royal Birkdale in Southport, the guidance aims to ensure that players, spectators, volunteers, officials, staff and the local community can enjoy a welcoming, inclusive and memorable experience.

“The atmosphere at The Open is unlike any other major sporting event and one of the things that makes it so unique. It is built on a shared respect for the players, the course, fellow fans and the traditions of the Championship. Every year, our fans play a huge part in creating that experience.
“The Open Commitment isn’t about changing what makes The Open so special, it is about maintaining its long-standing traditions. By following a few simple principles, everyone can help ensure The Open remains a welcoming, respectful and unforgettable experience for all.”
The Open Commitment will be communicated to fans before and during the Championship through digital channels, ticket communications and on-site signage.
By attending The Open, fans agree to comply with The Open Commitment and the Championship’s ticket terms and conditions. Serious or repeated breaches may result in removal from the course.
The 154th Open will be played at Royal Birkdale from 12th-19th July 2026.
The Open is golf’s original championship. Played since 1860 on iconic links golf courses, it is the sport’s most international major championship with qualifying events on every continent. For one week each year, the pursuit of the famous Claret Jug trophy is the focus of the sporting world, followed globally by millions of fans.
Staged by The R&A, The Open delivers an annual economic benefit of over £150 million to its host region, while the Championship’s commercial success supports the development of the game, worldwide.
