A Proud To Be Black event takes place in Southport today (Saturday, 30th October), as part of Black History Month.

It will be held at Greenbank High School in Hillside between 2pm and 5.30pm, and is organised by Southport Against Racism.

People are invited to come and celebrate with local musicians, speakers and performances from local schoolchildren.

Guests include Kenny Thompson, star of The Voice and a musical theatre star.

Phil Frampton, an award-winning key speaker, journalist, broadcaster and author, will speak at the event.

Copies of ‘The Golly In The Cupboard’, his childhood memoir about growing up as a black mixed race child in Southport, will be available for £7.99 at the event on Saturday (cash or cheques only).

Visitors can enjoy stalls and delicious Caribbean Fusion Food in the interval.

The afternoon is sponsored by Fletchers Solicitors in Southport.

Admission is free and all welcome. Organisers are inviting people to register for the event so they can get an idea of numbers, with people able to register via an EventBrite page here

Over 200 tickets have already been allocated for this free event.

Event organisers Nadia and Katrina said: “Here is your last chance to get your hands on some free tickets for our event at Greenbank School.

“Not only are there fantastic artists, key speakers, local children showing their talent, singers and bands we have award winning Caribbean food!

“For the children we will be painting their faces for the Halloween weekend and many treats will be on offer!

“This is an event not to be missed; it is unique, innovative, exciting and is going to bring knowledge but most of all smiles to the local community!”
