A stunning new exhibition celebrating legendary world explorer and pioneer photographer and cinematographer Herbert Ponting (1870-1935) has opened – and reveals some of his newly uncovered links to Southport.

Herbert Ponting remains most famous for taking breath-taking photographs and moving pictures during Captain Scott’s Terra Nova Expedition to Antarctica in 1910-1913.

The adventure sadly saw Captain Scott and others lose their lives after losing the race to become the first people to reach the South Pole.

Ponting, the talented ‘camera artist’, was the world’s first professional Antarctic photographer, a trailblazer who led the way for others to follow.

Some of his spectacular photographs of the exploration are now on show at The Atkinson on Lord Street in Southport town centre, thanks to a partnership with the Scott Polar Research Institute at the University of Cambridge.

They appear alongside artefacts and research carried out by Herbert Ponting’s biographer, Anne Strathie, who published a book about his life titled ‘Herbert Ponting – Scott’s Antarctic Photographer And Pioneer Filmmaker’ in 2021.

‘Herbert Ponting: Explorer and Photographer’ is free to attend, and runs until Saturday, 2nd September 2023.
