An Ainsdale councillor believes the closure of Southport Pontins could be “a real opportunity to deliver something special for Ainsdale”.
Cllr Lynne Thompson, a councillor for Ainsdale Ward since 2016, added that it would be “a travesty” if “the finest beach in Sefton” was not used to its full potential.
Owners Britannia expressed its ‘great sadness’ over the sudden closure of Pontins holiday park in Southport on 3rd January 2024.
Employees at the park, next to Ainsdale Beach. Were told the shock news on the same day as the announcement.
The attraction is owned by Britannia, which also owns three hotels in Southport; the Prince of Wales, the Scarisbrick Hotel and the Royal Clifton.
Cllr Lynne Thompson said: “I was pleased to see a statement released by Sefton Council outlining the situation from the local authorities point of view. Britannia does not hold all the cards.
“On 1st December I emailed officers of the Council expressing my concern about the probable closure, loss of employment and the wider implications for any regeneration plans at Ainsdale Beach Gateway.
“I asked the Council, as freeholder of the site, if it was their intention to contact Britannia, check facts and hopefully obtain some information on future prospects.I am pleased they acted swiftly.
“I feel this could be a real opportunity to deliver something special for Ainsdale. We must take it!
“It would be a travesty if we end up with the finest beach in Sefton surrounded by the most depressing access.”
Earlier this month, Britannia released a statement, which said: It is with great sadness that we announce the closure of Pontins Southport Holiday Park.
“After assessing the future viability of the park, we have come to the difficult decision to close our doors.
“Unfortunately, this means that Pontins Southport Holiday Park will be closing from Wednesday 3rd January 2024.
“We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
The news follows the closure of Pontins holiday parks in Prestatyn and Camber Sands in November.
The other remaining Pontins resorts are at Pakefield, Suffolk; and Weston-super-Mare.
