People in Southport have the rare opportunity to enjoy rides in a 1931 Austin 16/6 this Saturday (21st January 2023).
Simon Shrouder will be celebrating his birthday by driving this very special vehicle along Lord Street between midday and 3pm to raise money for the Race Against Dementia charity.
People are invited to give a minimum £3 donation, with two passengers able to travel in the car at any one time. The aim is to raise at least £150 for charity.
Simon will be setting off from outside The Grand on Lord Street, a stunningly beautiful art deco building which was restored by Mikhail Hotel and Leisure Group and reopened last summer.
The Grand is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year.
This Saturday’s charity event will allow participants to travel back to the pre-war era with a 1931 motor vehicle parked in front of a 1924 art deco former cinema and casino.
Simon Shrouder said: “I’ve signed up for the RAD Day because this cause is close to my heart.
“My mum, Grace Shrouder, died from dementia – my birthday is 21st January, the same as Lady Stewart’s. I was lucky enough to meet Sir Jackie Stewart who taught me to drive around Oulton Park on a very special day in the Eighties. He was the perfect gentleman – humble, kind and such a sublime driver.
“On Saturday I will be driving my 1931 Austin 16/6 on Lord Street in Southport. For a £3 donation for each person I will be offering rides.
“I will be there from 12 noon until 3pm and would welcome your support.
“I would like to say a big thanks to The Grand, Enigma Signs and The Garden Room in Churchtown for making this event possible.
“If you can’t take a ride then please just support my fundraising page and make a donation for a very worthwhile cause…. thanks.
“I want to take action and make an impact, and I would love your help. Whether you donate £5 or £500, every bit counts. I’ve set an ambitious goal because I know that with support from people like you, I can get there.
“Race Against Dementia raises and allocates funds to accelerate global research and development in the race to find a prevention or treatment for dementia.
“Their vision is a breakthrough in the prevention or treatment of dementia with the greatest of urgency.”
