Peet’s Plaice fish shop in Southport is now selling ‘biggest and most expensive fish’ it has ever sourced.

The venue, near Churchtown Lights on Cambridge Road in Churchtown, is owned by local fisherman Kevin Peet, who has been a fisherman for the past 40 years.

Yesterday he was stunned to see a 105 kg halibut – known as ‘the king of the sea’ – on sale at the fish market in Fleetwood on the Lancashire coast.

Kevin has since returned with the fish, with fillets now on sale and proving very popular at his shop.

He said: “In all the years I have been selling seafood, I have never bought a fish as big or as expensive as this one!

“I was delighted to return from the fish market in Fleetwood yesterday with this very special fish which cost me just short of £2,000.

“It’s a beautiful halibut which weighs 105 kilogrammes or around 230 pounds in weight.

“It was landed in Scandinavian waters and brought to Fleetwood by fishing boat.

“The halibut was so big I couldn’t fit it in my van! I had to fillet it into smaller pieces in Fleetwood before I could bring it back here.

“It is a really remarkable fish.

“I have had an amazing response since I posted the news on my Facebook page.

“The best was one man who came into our Peet’s Plaice shop to buy four halibut fillets.

“His daughter was on holiday in Corfu and saw the post on her phone so called her Dad and told him to get down here! The power of social media is amazing.

“The response from people has been brilliant, we’ve sold quite a few portions already, although there’s still lots left for Saturday!

“It’s something a little bit different for our customers.”

Kevin has already eaten some himself and gave his advice for anyone cooking it.

He said: “Halibut is known as ‘the king of the sea’, it’s a beautiful fish to eat.

“It’s a pure white fish, meatier than the likes of cod, hake or haddock.

“Cod is great battered and deep fried in a chippy because it really melts in the mouth when you eat it, whereas halibut is perfect when you pan fry it and serve it with some vegetables and potatoes or chips or noodles.

“I had some for my lunch on Friday. I just pan fried a portion and had it with some melted butter. It was amazing.”
