A traditional fishmonger in Southport has become so popular with customers it is now sending deliveries out across the UK.

Peets Plaice celebrated its 10th birthday in Churchtown Village in Southport last  year, having moved there from Southport Market.

It is owned and operated by local fisherman Kevin Peet, who has been fishing off the coast for the past 40 years.

Kevin lands some of his own produce with fish such as cod and seabass, as well as home smoking delicacies such as smoked haddock in a smoker behind his home in Marshside.

He also catches and pots his own famous Southport potted shrimps – a delicacy he used to sell to customers including the Queen Mother.

Interest in Kevin’s Peets Plaice shop and his traditional fishing skills have earned him substantial media coverage over the years, including a recent documentary on television in Germany.

Kevin said: “It’s astonishing how fast interest has grown in what we do and what we offer.

“We have a huge and loyal following here in Southport, which we have built up over many years.

“But thanks to national and now international media interest, we now deliver orders through our website all over the UK.

“We guarantee next day delivery too.

“We get lots of orders for things like our famous potted shrimps, which have received extensive media coverage.

“It has been a great honour to do some filming for a German documentary recently. After it was filmed we were receiving inquiries from German people living in the UK asking if we did deliveries, which of course we were delighted to do!

“We even had a German customer come to visit us in our shop.

“Because the quality of our fish and seafood is so good and our prices are so reasonable, we also to lots of deliveries to the south of the UK and other parts of the country where fish and seafood is much more expensive.

“Even with our delivery charges, people can make big savings where they order with us.”

Kevin and his family are currently getting ready for their busiest time of the year.

He said: “Everyone loves fish and seafood at Christmas! It brings real luxury to the table and complements the traditional roast turkey really well.

“We always expand our offering in the lead-up to Christmas with things like dressed crab, our home-made pates, prawns, lobster, smoked salmon, gravlax, and much more besides.

“Peets Plaice has been a Southport institution for many years, and we’re delighted that our name is now becoming known across the country.”

Peets Plaice fishmonger opened at 142 Cambridge Road, next to Churchtown Lights in Churchtown Village in Southport, 11 years ago.

The business created and developed its website and online deliveries during the Covid pandemic, something Kevin has kept going as demand has grown.

He said: “It’s a service we maintain today. It means that while most people love coming into our shop to see the wide variety of fresh fish and seafood we have on our counter each day, they also have the option, either during bad weather or at times when it’s more convenient for them, that they can simply order online and we will deliver orders straight to their door.

“It also means we can deliver orders all over the UK.

“We enjoy supplying fresh fish to a variety of local businesses in the area, including fish and chip shops, restaurants, hotels and care homes too.

“This is very much a family business. As well as myself and my wife, Nicola, we also have my sister, Kate, and my sister-in-law, Tuk, working here.

“We all have the highest standards that you need to run a business.

“We are proud of our five star hygiene rating and shoppers know they can buy the freshest fish here, along with any advice you need.

“Our fish is landed locally, either at Fleetwood or Scotland. Our top produce on our fresh fish counter includes: cod, salmon, hake, tuna, halibut, sea bass, smoked salmon, monkfish, Royal Greenland prawns, crayfish, crab, dressed crab, Scottish rope mussels, lemon sole, kippers, rollmop herrings, fish pie mix, smoked cod, smoked haddock, and much more besides.

“On quality, we will always beat supermarkets, because of the freshness of our produce.”
