The Esplanade Car Park in Southport

Pay and display parking is on its way to the Esplanade Car Park in Southport.

It could see a rise in car parking charges, where it currently costs just £2 to park all day with £5.50 to park on Sundays and bank holidays.

The busy car park, between Victoria Park and Southport Beach, is currently manned by operators inside a booth who take payment at the entrance.

Sefton Council is instead proposing to install pay and display meters at the site.

It is not yet known how much the charges would be, although charges at two nearby car parks may be indicative:

Dunes Leisure Centre car park

Up to one hour is 80p

Up to 2 hours £1.50

Up to 4 hours £3.50

Over 4 hours £5

Floral Hall car park

Up to one hour is £1

Up to 2 hours £1.80

Up to 4 hours £3.60

Over 4 hours £5

A report by the Sefton Council Assistant Director of Place – Highways & Public Protection said: “It is intended to change the method of payment for users of the Esplanade Park & Ride car park.

“At the present time, the daily charge to use the car park (currently £2 per day and £5.50 Sundays and Bank Holidays) is collected at a kiosk on entry.

“A more cost effective method is for users to obtain their tickets from a Pay & Display machine.

“In order to bring parking fee collection methods in line with other car parks and realise a cost saving, it is proposed that the borough-wide off-street car parking Traffic Regulation Order be amended in relation to the Esplanade Park & Ride car park.”

The car park would be in operation between 7am and 7pm, except on days when used for special events.
