One of Southport’s oldest shops is closing after more than six decades of trading.
Kelly’s Electrical will say farewell later this month, having served generations of families since it first opened in 1957.
It was established by Jack Kelly, who ran the iconic electrical goods shop for over 50 years, gaining a fine reputation for his incredible knowledge and his unbeatable customer service, until he retired in September 2020. He sadly died in August 2021.
The shop was passed to John and Kim Kelly, who converted part of the premises into Kose Sensory Play.
John Kelly said: “After 56 years of trading, we have decided, for many reasons, to close Kelly’s.
Last day of opening will be Friday 30th June.
“I know if my Grandad was still around he would want to say thank you for the decades worth of custom.
”Thank you all.
“Please pop in over the next two weeks.”

After taking over the shop, John and Kim used part of it as Kose Sensory Play, to give people ‘two shops in one’.
Kim said two years ago: “For a long time we wanted to provide children with additional needs a ‘try before you buy’ sensory shop as we know too well how difficult it is to provide children with calming sensory items which are affordable and durable.”
Jack Kelly was described by his family as: “a Southport legend, well known for his big personality and kind heart”.
He spent his retirement still down Wesley Street, instead of serving customers he would enjoy popping down everyday and sitting outside Walkers having lunch with his family.
Speaking on the Kelly’s Electrical Facebook page, The Walking Stick Store said: “Sad to hear , Kelly’s was I think one of ,if not the longest , independent business in town , fond memories of Jack , he WAS Wesley Street , Wishing you John and family best wishes for whatever is next for you , Margo and John.”
Adam Hearty said: “Sorry to hear but wish you all the best for the future.”
Helen Fearn said: “Oh that’s sad, but understandable. You and your Grandad fitted batteries in every watch I ever owned. And my husband. And our kids. Best of luck!”
Chloe Simms said: “End of an era. So sorry to hear that you’re closing, the street just won’t be the same without Kelly’s! Wishing you all the best of luck for the future.”
