Martin Hovden

A live music event will be held to celebrate the life of Southport journalist and radio presenter Martin Hovden.

The event will take place in the Extravaganza events space at Southport Market on Thursday 20th April 2023.

Martin, a campaigning local journalist who was the Editor of Champion Newspapers for many years before becoming a radio presenter with Mighty Radio, tragically died at home in December. He was 70 years old.

Throughout his career, he had a real love of live music and a passion for supporting up and coming musicians, determined to give them a platform to succeed.

His ‘Live Sounds’ column in the Champion and later in the Southport Visiter series of newspapers saw him giving a valuable platform to talented local performers.

Martin was a regular presence at live gigs locally, always happy to give his time freely as a judge at contests such as Battle Of The Bands.

A call will be going out in the next couple of weeks for any bands or musicians who may be keen to take part.

Money at Martin’s celebration event will go towards The Whitechapel Centre, an independent local charity based in Liverpool working in partnership to end to homelessness, social exclusion and housing poverty in our communities.

The music event is being organised by Suzy Walker, who runs the Gambolling Arena Theatre Company in Southport and knew Martin for many years. The organsing committee includes Steve Ashcroft from Southport News and Andrew Brown from Stand Up For Southport.

Suzy said: “I had a meeting with Sefton Council this week and asked if they could provide us with the space to hold this event. They very kindly agreed for us to use the Extravaganza Space at Southport Market on Thursday 20th April.

“We are in the early stages of putting everything together.

“We will be putting out a call soon for bands and musicians who have been supported by Martin Hovden over the years who may like to take part in his memory, as a celebration of his life while also raising money for a charity that was very close to his heart.

“Gambolling Arena will be providing the microphones and PA systems.

“John Coates has very kindly offered to provide the technical side of things for free.

“We will be raising funds on the night for The Whitechapel Centre which supports homeless people, a charity Martin’s family has asked for donations for at his funeral.

“Martin had a real passion for live music, and for supporting talented young musicians and bands.

“This is an event very much in his memory.”
