As the country prepares to move into phase two of the Covid-19 lockdown, Queenscourt Hospice in Southport wants to focus on the ways people have continued to lend their support to the hospice during this very difficult time.
From donating their beer money and giving up their Christmas present to running, walking and cycling miles, people have been extremely generous with their time and money as they prove they are all part of a Compassionate Community.
Over the next two weeks, Stand Up For Southport will be sharing the stories of just some of those who supported #teamqueenscourt throughout this pandemic.
We are starting today with the story of Zara Smith, 10, who donated one of her Christmas presents after hearing there was a shortage of surgical masks for health workers at Queenscourt.
An aspiring doctor, Zara received a full medical kit from Father Christmas which included two boxes of genuine surgical masks. Although she had used some of them when carrying out operations on her teddies, Zara still had about 80 masks which have now been put to good use at Queenscourt.

Zara, a pupil at Scarisbrick Hall School, explains why she wanted to help Queenscourt.
She said: “I had some masks and I heard that people needed them so thought it would be better if they could have them.”
As well as donating the masks, Zara also wanted to cheer staff up at Queenscourt so included with the package a colourful rainbow picture along with a handwritten note.
Zara’s parents, Kate and Paul, and big brother Harrison are all proud of her for giving away part of her Christmas present, but are not surprised by her generosity.
“She is very kind and caring and is always thinking of others and trying to cheer others up,” said Kate.
“She is doing OK without the masks as she still has lots of syringes she can use on her teddies. She really wants to be a doctor when she’s older.”
