Lewis Wright

Funeral details have been released for Southport ‘Child of Courage’ Lewis Wright after his devastating death aged 15.

His funeral will take place on Wednesday 6th December 2023 at 3pm at Southport Crematorium, 159 Southport Road, Scarisbrick, PR8 5JQ.

It will be followed by his wake at The Metro Hotel, 3 Portland Street, Southport, PR8 1LL.

Lewis’ Mum, Kayleigh McDougall, said: “We are asking that everyone is to wear dark clothing with a flash of colour.

“Anyone who loved, followed or supported Lewis on his journey is welcome to attend both his service and his wake.

“Instead of flowers we are asking for donations to Young Lives vs Cancer.

“There will be a donation plate at the service.”

She wrote earlier: “As a family we are devastated to have to tell everyone that Lewis was taken ill in the early hours of Thursday morning 16th November.

“After a long night of tests, x-rays and scans we were given the news that Lewis’ cancer had once again returned and was spreading at a speed that could no longer be treated.

“After this we were told we would only have our boy with us for a matter of days, he chose to spend his final days in Alder Hey children’s hospital surrounded by family.

“Lewis passed away on Thursday morning 16th November at 9.37am with his family and is now at peace.

“As you can imagine we are all broken beyond words and will need time to try and process our loss.”

Lewis celebrated his 15th birthday in Alder Hey children’s hospital in Liverpool on 16th July.

The brave Birkdale High School pupil has been battling cancer for the past three and a half years.

On 31st October this year he went into school at Birkdale High in Southport for the first time since Year 9, going back in Year 11.

Earlier this year Kayleigh said: “I just want to say a massive thank you to everyone for all Lewis’ birthday wishes, messages, cards, gifts, donations and overall support throughout this journey.

“Every day is a new battle, a new symptom or side effect and guaranteed a new emotion.

“Lewis is worried and it breaks my heart when his infectious smile disappears and the tears and fear start to show.”

Lewis was initially diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia in July 2020, just four days before his 12th birthday.

He then endured a tough few months of gruelling chemotherapy treatment at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool before he was declared cancer free in March 2021.

Boyzone star Ronan Keating was so impressed by Lewis’ bravery – and an online video of him singing – that he phoned him to wish him well during his initial ordeal.

Lewis then overcame cancer a second and then a third time with more gruelling treatment before the latest devastating news.

On the Stand Up For Southport Facebook group, one person wrote: “I’m so sorry for your loss. My thoughts go out to Lewis’ family & friends.”

Another wrote: “One very brave young man.”

Another post said: “What a wonderful boy he was.”
