The founders of a new community interest company (CIC) determined to promote sustainability across Sefton are proud to have been awarded a Certificate of Appreciation at this year’s Volunteer Awards.

Rebecca Armstrong and Nadia Speers-Robinson founded The Hearth earlier this year, working closely with Green Sefton and other local organisations and volunteers.

Earlier this year they organised their first Earth Day event, and are in the process of putting together plans for Earth Day 2026.

They have founded the CASA (Climate And Sustainability Action) group which brings together local businesses to learn more about sustainability.

In June they organised Southport’s Great Big Green Lunch.

This huge free event took place at Wayfarers Arcade on Lord Street in Southport town centre on Sunday 8th June 2025.

The sustainable community lunch aimed to be as plastic free as possible, with visitors invited to bring their own plates, cutlery and cups, while bunting was created by volunteers using pre-loved material .

Money raised went towards the Elsie’s Story and Bebe’s Hive charities.

In September they held the Great British Beach Clean on Southport Beach, where they cleared over 50 kilogrammes of rubbish from the coast.

They recently hosted a free festive lunch for over 65 year olds at Southport Community Centre, which was funded by the McCarthy Stone Foundation and supported by volunteers from Making Energy Greener, Southport Flower Show and elsewhere.

The Hearth directors Rebecca Armstrong and Nadia Speers-Robinson said:

“We are absolutely delighted to have received a Certificate of Appreciation at this year’s Volunteer Awards – what an honour!

“Working alongside Green Sefton throughout 2025 has been such a joy, especially as we joined forces to deliver the Great British Beach Clean in September.

Together, all the groups across the region have made a real difference for our local coastline and green spaces. It was wonderful to see so many passionate volunteers come together for the cause.

“Here’s to continuing this fantastic work – we’re already excited about what 2026 will bring as we work hand in hand to protect and celebrate our beautiful natural spaces.

“The Hearth CIC is a community organisation based in Sefton that hosted its first big event, Earth Day, at Wayfarers Arcade in Southport in April.

“This free, family-friendly event celebrated sustainability and empowered attendees with practical ways to save money on energy bills while making a positive impact on the planet.

“Plans are already underway to create an even bigger Earth Day event for 2026.”
