Flood Alerts are in place as Storm Franklin hits the UK

Thousands of homes and businesses are at risk of flooding as Storm Franklin sweeps in hot on the heels of Storm Eunice, bringing more heavy rain.

The Environment Agency has issued a Flood Alert for a large area of land from Ainsdale, running south past Woodvale, Formby, and Ince Blundell.

There is a Met Office Yellow Weather Warning for rain until 6pm today with heavy rain expected to lead to some disruption while a wind warning will start at 12pm and last for 24 hours.

The Met Office guidance states: “Spray and flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures, causing delays or cancellations to train and bus service.

“There is a chance that homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings.”

Merseyrail has cancelled a number of its trains due to the stormy weather.

Alerts and warnings around the county in place come with this advice from the Met Office: “We are liaising with emergency services and local authorities.

“Avoid using low lying footpaths and any bridges near local watercourses and do not attempt to walk or drive through flood water.”

Two flood warnings and 10 flood alerts are also in place across large swathes of Lancashire today, meaning that flooding is either likely or possible in those areas and that residents should be prepared. Updates for Lancashire can be found on Lancs Live here.

The Environment Agency has been working over the past week to prepare for the reasonable worst case impacts of Storm Eunice, planning for all scenarios to help keep communities and people safe.

Teams have been out on the ground to erect barriers and clear screens to help mitigate potential flooding impacts.

Members of the public are being urged to sign up for free flood warnings and ensure they know what to do in case of flooding.

Stefan Laeger, the Environment Agency’s Flood Duty Manager, said:

“Further spells of heavy rain are expected this weekend which will also bring the potential for inland flooding.

“Environment Agency teams remain out on the ground closing gates and clearing screens where flood debris can build up, and stand ready to operate further flood defences if needed. “We have made significant investment in flood defences across the country, better protecting 314,000 homes since 2015. 18,000 properties have been protected by defences in affected areas so far but we urge caution as flood risk continues.”
