The new Southport Veterans Hub is looking for people who would love to join its friendly team of volunteers, supporting local veterans and members of the Armed Forces.

People interested in finding out more are invited to a Volunteers Reception at the centre, on Wesley Street in Southport town centre, between 6.30pm and 8pm on Wednesday, 9th March, 2022. All are welcome.

The Hub, which is operated by the Southport branch of the Royal British Legion, was officially opened in January by Southport MP Damien Moore and Mayor of Sefton, Clare Carragher.

Based on Wesley Street in Southport town centre, it is a safe space where veterans can go and meet up, enjoy a coffee with friends, and seek advice or support.

The Royal British Legion will be on hand to help veterans with issues including welfare support, while also being able to signpost the best places for issues such as mental health.

This will be the first centre in the country to use the smart new Royal British Legion logo, as the organisation celebrates its 100th anniversary.

The RBL previously had an office on Shakespeare Street in Southport, but organisers felt that a more central location would make the facilities much more accessible for veterans to be able to use.

Southport Royal British Legion Chair Major Nick McEntee said: “Are you looking for an opportunity to make a difference in the Southport community?

“Would you like to join a passionate and friendly team of volunteers at the brand new Royal British Legion Veterans Hub?

“If this is you then please join us for an informal evening where you can find out about the plans we have for ‘The Hub’ and how you can help with your time and wisdom.

“You don’t need to have served or be part of the veterans community but you do need to be passionate about what we are doing and you do need to have some time to spare to help us make a REAL difference.

“Relevant training will be given and you will receive ongoing support.”

The new Veterans Hub opened its doors in December, with the official opening ceremony taking place in January.

Southport Royal British Legion Chair Major Nick McEntee is keen to make the organisation more accessible to more veterans, both through the new Southport Veterans Hub, and also through some new events.

He said: “We want the Hub to be the first port of call for the local veterans community whenever they need help and support.

“We want it to be available for veterans of a working age; young veterans coming out of the services, perhaps in their 20s or 30s, as well as older veterans as well. That is why the Hub will look modern, and why it will feel inviting for people.

“We want to have a welfare officer available, and we will get as many of our committee through First Aid courses so we can signpost people to enjoy the best medical and mental health support should they need it.”

The new Hub will be a friendly meeting place for people to call in and meet up. There will also be lots of help available.
