Christmas characters in Wayfarers Arcade in Southport

Families can enjoy meeting Father Christmas and Dick Whittington when they call into Wayfarers Arcade in Southport today! (Saturday 18th November 2023) 

The historic arcade, on Lord Street, will also host a book signing of the new Southport Illustrated book by local artist Ruth Spillane. 

Ruth is also selling her new Wayfarers Arcade Christmas cards, calendars and prints. 

People will be ankle to see Father Christmas and Mother Christmas, plus Dick Whittington and King Rat, from midday onwards. 

They will be inside the arcade and walking along Lord Street to say hello to people and bring some festive cheer, on the same day that the Southport Festive Fayre is taking place in Southport town centre.

They will also be promoting the new Panto Store and Christmas Grotto which are coming to Wayfarers Arcade this December. 

Gambolling Arena Theatre Company Director Suzy Walker said: “The characters are all looking forward to meeting everyone, both inside Wayfarers Arcade, and as they walk along Lord Street. 

“We will be promoting the new Panto Store and the Christmas Grotto which are coming to Wayfarers Arcade soon. 

“We will also be bringing characters from the Dick Whittington panto which is coming to the Waterfront Hotel this December. 

“The Panto Store is something new we are doing. People can come and see it on Sunday 3rd December, Sunday 10th December and Sunday 17th December, between 11am and 4pm. “There will be lots for people to enjoy, and it is free! 

“People will be able to enjoy singing by the Christmas Belles; performances by Wright’s Performing Arts; stars from the SDC pantomime; and more. 

“On 17th December, Southport Comedy Festival and Big Comedy UK Director Brendan Riley will be coming to host Comedy Bingo for children. 

“Santa and his elves will also be popping in!”

Ruth Spillane is looking forward to signing copies of her brand new Southport Illustrated book, which features her unique depictions of scenes from across the town. 

They include scenes of Wayfarers Arcade itself, which is celebrating its 125th birthday this year after opening to the public in 1898.

Other locations in the book include various sections of Lord Street, The Grand, The Atkinson, Southport Pier, Silcock’s Funland and Carousel, Churchtown Village, Birkdale Village, Southport Market Quarter, June The Florist, Hesketh Park and more.
