A new exhibition celebrating British 19th century quilt making has been officially opened at The Atkinson in Southport. 

Quilt | Grid | Pattern opened its doors to viewers on Saturday 16th September 2023 with an official launch on Friday 22nd September 2023. 

The exhibition is open until Saturday 24th February 2024.

Admission is free. 

Artists Kevin Laycock and Christopher Harris reinterpret historic quilt making through abstract painting and mixed media artworks. 

The exhibition also showcases examples of British 19th century quilt making and the artists’ responses to the patterns and structures contained within them.

Gawthorpe Textiles Collection provided the touchstone for Harris and Laycock’s latest work. Housed at the National Trust’s Gawthorpe Hall in Padiham, near Burnley in Lancashire, the collection includes over 11,000 items of textile history.

A spokesperson for The Atkinson said: “Our thanks are due to curator Rachel Midgley for her help in selecting and preparing work from the Gawthorpe Textile Collection for display.”
