Audiences to this year’s Southport Comedy Festival have been wowed by the brand new venue for this year’s event – a giant, luxury marquee!
The Festival, which this October celebrated its 10th anniversary, previously held gigs in theatres, bars, restaurants and other venues in the town centre.
This year, festival-goers have instead been impressed by a beautiful structure, put up by local firm Elite Marquees, that has included a feature bar, flooring, carpets, heating – and even a large glass chandelier above the bar!
Guests enjoyed 15 shows over 17 days at the Festival, which was sponsored by Anthony James Estate Agents, watching top comedians including Russell Kane, Ed Byrne, Reginald D Hunter, Paul Sinha, Rich Hall, Jo Caulfield, Hal Cruttenden, Tom Stade and more.
Guests also enjoyed a New Comedian of the Year contest, a Disco Bingo night to raise funds for Southport Flower Show and a free Comedy Bingo night for NHS and care home workers, which was provided by Anthony James Estate Agents.
Southport Comedy Festival Director Brendan Riley said: “With this being our first Southport Comedy Festival in a marquee, people didn’t know what to expect!
“When they heard about the change of venue, and that we were going to be performing in Victoria Park, some people were asking us, are the shows going to be outdoors? We had a laugh about that!
“Elite Marquees have been fantastic. They really have gone above and beyond. We have even had a chandelier hanging up in the bar area! Mark Dilley and the team have been brilliant to work with.

“We have also been working well alongside Alan Adams and his team from Southport Flower Show and Victoria Park Events, Mark Catherall and his team from Sefton Council Tourism, and others. It has been a real team effort.
“There has been a full bar in the marquee, it has been heated, carpeted, with flooring, and great seating.
“It is a top, top marquee. It is just perfect.
“People coming to the Southport Comedy Festival shows have been pleased by just how good it has been.
“There have been lots of compliments from people saying it has been brilliant.
“Being able to get some great food from the Rollin Stove, which has been doing food, has also been very popular.”

People locally will have already seen their work at Victoria Park in Southport after they provided services for clients including Southport Flower Show and for Sefton Council’s Tourism Team at Southport Food and Drink Festival.
They also provide marquees for wedding venues at locations including the Bombed Out Church in Liverpool and at Orrell Wood in Formby.
Mark Dilley said: “It’s a great set up they have had there at Southport Comedy Festival!
“The marquee took us three days to put up.
“The shows have been brilliant. I was there to watch Russell Kane, Paul Sinha and Mark Thomas. The shows have been really good.

“We have heard lots of great feedback too, everyone has been enjoying the gigs. I think the Festival has done really well this year.”
This has been a time of real celebration for Mark. Last Tuesday day, he became a dad to a baby boy, adding to his 18 month old son and his 13-year-old daughter.
Work at his fast-growing firm has also been keeping him busy.
He said: “We are the only marquee firm in Southport on this scale.
“The marquees we provide for clients cover everything from small parties, to major festivals.
“We work with a number of companies including Mercedes, Mazda, pharmaceutical and large law firms and many others, for large corporate events.
“The biggest event we have organised was for an elaborate 18th birthday party in 2018, which had a quarter of a million pound budget.
“We brought in pop band Rudimental, who had had a number one hit at the time. The marquee was on two levels, with a glass balustrade, night sky ceilings and fire breathing bar staff, and a teepee village for the overnight guests.

“We have been really busy this year. We have not been able to take on any more work in 2021 since the lockdown was lifted, but we are still taking bookings for the last of our available 2022 dates.
“We can provide marquees for any event, big or small, in addition to whatever else is needed such as entertainment, furniture, a bar, or anything else.
“We look forward to the future of working at Victoria Park , this event has shown a lot of people what can be done with the space and we are excited for 2022.”
