Members of the community enjoyed an opportunity to view ambitious plans to build a brand new Greenbank High School in Southport and chat with architects behind the scheme at a well-attended drop-in consultation event.

Visitors were warmly welcomed by Greenbank High School Headteacher Davina Aspinall, Southport Learning Trust CEO Iain Raikes, the team from BAM Construction, representatives from the Department for Education (DfE) and others at the school, on Hastings Road in Hillside.

They were able to see artist’s impressions of how the new school would look as well as discover more about the proposals, ask questions and provide feedback.

It is one of several major schemes being progressed in Southport alongside the restoration of Southport Pier, the creation of the new Marine Lake Events Centre, the new Cove Resort and more.

This is a fantastic new school being built for local children for generations to come.

The new school building is planned to be available for use by autumn 2028 with the project completing in summer 2029, after the final phase of external works.

The school, which was judged Good at its most recent Ofsted inspection, will see existing buildings demolished and replaced with a single, brand new state-of-the-art school building through the Department for Education’s national School Rebuilding Programme.

BAM Construction has been appointed by the DfE through the programme as the contractor to transform the site to provide a new sustainable school building and supporting facilities.

They aim to submit a full planning application to Sefton Council at the end of March or in April 2026.

As part of this process Greenbank High School, which is part of Southport Learning Trust, is  consulting with neighbours, community groups, and wider stakeholders to listen to their views on the proposals.

The design proposals are available to view on the school’s website where there is an opportunity to provide feedback to BAM and the project team: https://greenbankhigh.co.uk

The development would be phased to allow for the school to remain open, using the majority of the existing buildings, while the replacement school building is being constructed.

Subject to securing planning permission, on-site work would start in late 2026.

Access to the school for pupils, staff and visitors would be unchanged, with vehicle and pedestrian access remaining from Hastings Road, as well as retained pedestrian and cycle access from Waterloo Road. The school will retain its existing pupil capacity, operating as a seven-form entry school.

Greenbank High School Headteacher Davina Aspinall said:

“Greenbank is an exceptional school at the heart of our local community where we all belong.

“Greenbank has a long history of academic success. The school has always given its students the best possible start in life by combining excellent teaching with access to the best specialist facilities and many wider extra-curricular opportunities.

“Our diverse and inclusive school community provides an exceptional education that nurtures, enriches and empowers children to thrive.

“Our aim is to develop and nurture the talents of all our pupils, promoting aspiration to take their place as caring and confident young people that will continue to show the world their brilliance.”
