Fish and chips at The Swan chippy in Southport

The two Michelin starred Chef Patron of the best restaurant in England has revealed his favourite takeaway in the UK – the iconic The Swan chippy in Southport!

Marc Birchall, who operates the multi award-winning Moor Hall Restaurant With rooms in Aughton in Lancashire, was full of praise for the “amazing fish takeaway” on Stanley Street in Southport town centre.

Moor Hall opened in 2016 and was named ‘Best Restaurant In England’ at the prestigious Estrella Damm National Restaurant Awards in 2022.

It followed a pattern of recent national success for the two Michelin starred restaurant.

Speaking to the Liverpool ECHO, Marc Birchall said: “I’d eat anything except bugs and insects and I don’t eat many takeaways. They’re not my thing. However, one really good place is The Swan in Southport.

“It’s this great fish and chip restaurant and they do an amazing fish takeaway. I really like it.”

Mark’s three critics at home see him leave his fancy cooking at work.

He said: “When I’m at home we cook classic family dinners because that’s what the kids want. They saw me on Hairy Bikers and thought it was cool but within two minutes they were running around again. The food at home is much more relaxed because they don’t care and wouldn’t be bothered with the fancy stuff.”

Owned and managed by the Defty family for over 45 years, The Swan Restaurant & Take Away on Stanley Street is the oldest established fish and chip restaurant in Southport and has a reputation second to none.

The Swan has been featured on television several times and has been spoken about as far as America and Australia.

It only used the best quality fish and potatoes and whenever possible, local and sustainable produce is used.

Large and small coach parties are welcome and always leave the restaurant more than satisfied.
