Publication of the Southport & Formby Champion and other Champion newspapers has been temporarily suspended as the second Covid-19 lockdown begins today.
The free newspapers will not appear for the next few weeks with no definite date yet set for their return.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson has pledged that the current restrictions, which require ‘non-essential’ shops and businesses, restaurants, pubs and others to close, will end on December 2.
The Champion will continue to publish stories on its website and on its Facebook page.
In a statement they said: “We will be back! Local news prepared by professional journalists and delivered free to your door every week is what the Champion is all about… but without advertising income from local businesses who are now in lockdown, we fear this will not be possible at least for the next few weeks.
“Ironically, there has never been a more vital need to deliver local news that covers and tackles the issues affecting your lives and livelihoods than right now.
“As in the first lockdown we are frustrated that we cannot fund this service for you. However, we will be back as soon as possible.
“The fighting spirit of the Champion team remains as strong as ever.
“In the meantime, we will continue to bring you news on the free ChampNews website and Facebook page.
|”Working from home we ask you to stay in touch with us. Let us know how the lockdown is affecting you, your families, friends, your employment and your businesses. So tell us your stories, good news and how we can help your business make it through this difficult time.”
