Captain Tom Moore, aged 99, has raised a staggering £12million for the NHS by completing laps of his garden on a zimmer frame

It’s time to get your bunting out and enjoy some very special VE Day Street Parties across Southport – from the comfort of your own home!

People are being urged to decorate your homes red, white and blue and to enjoy a picnic in your front or back garden on Friday, May 8, sharing the celebrations with your neighbours – whilst maintaining strict social distancing during the coronavirus pandemic.

Plans to celebrate those who sacrificed so much during World War II have been brought into focus by war hero Captain Tom Moore, aged 99, who has raised a staggering £12million for the NHS by completing laps of his garden on a zimmer frame.

Now it’s time for us all to celebrate Captain Tom and all others from his era who made Victory possible, both on the Home Front and those fighting overseas.

Among those celebrating VE Day from their home in Southport this May will be Rob and Liza Smallman, owners of La Tabella restaurant in Churchtown

Liza said: “One of the residents Katie has set up a Whats App group to make sure all the residents in our road are looking after the more vulnerable and isolated neighbours and she has heard about the VE Day Stay Home celebrations.

“We are asking people to decorate their houses in red, white and blue and come out for a socially distanced get together!

“There will be wartime music blasting out and we are looking at doing some cakes for the whole street.

“It’s all about celebrating VE Day and all that it means but also pulling together as a community in such difficult times.”

This May marks the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe during World War Two. It came on 8 May 1945, with the formal acceptance by Britain and the Allied Forces of Nazi Germany’s unconditional surrender of its armed forces.

The Second War continued however with British troops among those fighting against the Japanese unil their capitulation on August 15.

Sefton Council had initially supported plans for a VE Day Community Group to host a community street party in Formby celebrating the 75th VE Day anniversary. This would have been held on Saturday, May 9 with live entertainment from the area and a parade in the village with military vehicles.
