An “inspirational’’ senior Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust nurse has received a national award.

Angie Westwood, Matron of the Critical Care Unit at Southport Hospital, has been awarded a Cavell Star award for her services to patients and colleagues after being nominated for the honour by colleagues.

She said she was “proud’’ to receive the award.

She said: “I am deeply honoured and grateful to receive the Cavell Star Award. This recognition is a reflection of the incredible team I have the privilege of working alongside in Critical Care.

“It is truly a privilege to support and listen to my colleagues as we navigate the challenges of our work together. My dedication stems from the compassion, resilience, and excellence I see every day.’’

She added: “Striving to be the best teammate isn’t just a personal goal – it’s a collective mission we share, to ensure that every member of our team feels valued, supported, and empowered to deliver the highest quality of care to our patients.

“This award belongs to all of us, and I am proud to continue innovating and growing with such an inspiring group of professionals.’’

Her nomination stated: “Angie is such a worthy winner for her dedication and commitment to her colleagues, ensuring they are always supported and listened to and striving to be the best teammate possible through compassion, excellence and innovation.

“What an inspiration she is.’’

It’s not Angie’s first awards as she previously won the ‘Compassion in Action’ award at Southport and Ormskirk hospitals’ ‘Time to Shine’ Awards, for going the extra mile and showing extraordinary compassion in all aspects of her role.

Cavell Star Awards are national awards given by the Cavell Nurses’ Trust to nurses, midwives, nursing associates and healthcare assistants who show exceptional care.

Cavell Nurses’ Trust is a charity that supports UK nurses, midwives and healthcare assistants, both working and retired, when they are suffering a personal or financial crisis, often due to illness, disability, domestic abuse and rising living costs.

The award scheme was launched in 2018 and each award winner receives a medal, presentation case and pin badge.
