Calls have been made to introduce a rating scheme for hotels and holiday accommodation in order to drive up standards in the industry.

It would be similar to the ratings currently given to restaurants, bars, cafes and other food establishments, which sees them regularly inspected and ordered to display their rating of anywhere between Five and Zero.

The aim is to encourage venues to work hard to improve their scores, and for customers to have confidence in standards in wherever they are dining.

The ‘Scores on the Doors’ scheme was introduced on 10th December 2008 by the Food Standards  Agency (FSA), which unveiled a six-tier scheme called the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme (FHRS) for England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Southport councillor Terry Jones now wants to see a hotel rating scheme following a number of concerns raised by standards at Britannia-owned establishments in the town.

Cllr Jones said: The introduction of this has seen a massive increase in food safety and the website allows consumers to make an informed decision on the food they purchase.

“After receiving several complaints and reading many bad articles in the press and online regarding Britannia, I now believe it is time for action and a similar scheme to be introduced for hotels and such accommodation, maybe a 5-flag rating which is assessed on health and safety, hygiene and cleanliness and other important factors making the accommodation an acceptable standard.

“At present you can look up a hotel’s reviews, but it doesn’t tell you if they meet the standards required”.

Southport is currently going through change, with millions of pounds in investment from the government, the council and the private sector.

It’s putting Southport ahead of the game and making it an even better destination for the future. Cllr Jones said: “As we invest in the best venues and attractions then we need the hotels to be as good as the town’s offering.

“Negative accommodation reviews can have a negative impact on the local economy with people not returning and influencing others to avoid. As we recover from Covid, and many are choosing staycations then it’s time we make sure we have the appropriate holiday accommodation needed.

“I have now written to several Ministers including Minister for Business Anne-Marie Trevelyan to consider the possibility of introducing such a national scheme.

“Such a scheme will make sure that all establishments and their owners meet the required standards and if not met will be forced to close until such standards are met.

“This is an initiative I hope both the government and councils can get behind not only for Southport but for the country and its economy coming out of the pandemic.”
