Volunteers at the Botanic Gardens Aviaries in Churchtown are working with Chester Zoo to improve the facility for the wide array of birds there.
They are working to provide more plants, substrate and dig boxes while a new space, or an extension, will be provided for the Macaws.
A Botanic Gardens Aviaries spokesperson said: “We are working collaboratively with Chester Zoo to make the spaces the best they can be for our birds.
“Over upcoming months birds are going to be provided with more plants, substrate and dig boxes to encourage more natural foraging and behaviours.
“Our keepers provide enrichment through different activities but we want to encourage more natural enrichment.
“Future plans are to create a new space for our Macaws or extend their current enclosure, double mesh our aviaries, replace our roofing, turf more of the guinea pig and rabbit enclosures and more! But of course these changes are costly and won’t happen overnight.
“What many of our followers may not know is that the majority of our funding comes from donations through our donation tins, all of the birds in our care are rescue birds, they have either been donated or rehomed with us when owners could no longer care for them and many come from a caged environment.
“We do not buy any birds or encourage breeding. Our aim is to provide a space for birds who need us.
“If you can help support our cause to provide these animals with the best spaces possible, please come visit and pop some pennies in our donation boxes.”
