Families are invited to come and celebrate the season of growth and renewal at Wayfarers Arcade on Lord Street in Southport town centre this weekend.

The historic Victorian arcade will host a free May Day Magic event between 11am and 4pm this Saturday (3rd May 2025).

This will be the latest in the arcade’s series of vibrant creative village events.

There is lots to enjoy with a maypole, sword dancing, folk music, artisan stalls, entertainment, food and drink, workshops, craft activities and more.

May Day is a European festival of ancient origins marking the beginning of summer, usually celebrated on 1st May, around halfway between the Northern Hemisphere’s Spring equinox and June solstice.

Traditions often include gathering wildflowers and green branches (‘bringing in the May’), weaving floral garlands, crowning a May Queen, and setting up a Maypole, May Tree or May Bush, around which people dance and sing.

Come into Wayfarers Arcade and discover:

Live Folk Music from:

The Wanderers

Vinny and the Engineers

Cabin Hill

Southport Swords – thrilling sword dancing displays

Green Man performers roaming the Arcade

Maypole dancing – bring your children in traditional dress to take part

Springtime food and drink – taste the season

Artisan market stalls – find handmade, unique treasures

All the shops, cafes, art galleries, barbers, beauty salons and other local businesses inside Wayfarers Arcade will all be open.

Dr. Eric Lybeck from Wayfarers Arcade said:

“Our Creative Village events have been getting bigger and better each time since we launched them earlier this year. We’d love you to come to Wayfarers Arcade and join in with everything there is to offer.

“We welcomed so many people to our recent Creative Village days, including our Spring Flower Festival and our Venetian Carnival, and we’d like to build on that excitement.

“Don’t forget to put them in your diary each month, you can always expect something new and surprising – after our next event (31 May) we’ll switch to the first Saturday of every month.  And we’ll start adding spin-off events throughout the months as well – wine and cheese nights, waltzes, performances, farmers markets – there will more and more reasons to pop round to Wayfarers just to see what’s on’

“In the meantime, let’s bring some magic, music, and May Day joy to the heart of Southport.

“Once again, there will be free entry – all welcome!”

May Day is among the regular ‘Creative Village’ events due to take place with the ambition of welcoming more visitors, bringing a new vibrancy into the arcade and attracting potential new traders.

The Arcade was thrilled to be named as a Finalist in the Grand Pride Of Sefton Awards last week in the Sefton Arts Award category.

Dr. Lybeck said: “We were honoured to be nominated alongside such inspiring organisations across the Borough. Since moving to Southport three years ago I’ve noticed a shift towards positivity and forward-thinking and we’re proud to be a small part of that new dawn for this beautiful seaside town.”

Future Creative Village dates at Wayfarers Arcade include:

3rd May – May Day Magic

31st May – Global Village

5 July – Kupala Night

2nd August – Lughnasadh

6 September – Michaelmas

4 October – Beer Street at the Rushbearing Festival

31st October & 1st November – Halloween / Samhain

27th November – Lancashire Day, and the launch of the Christmas Market until 28th December.

These are a fabulous opportunity for businesses, makers, food vendors and others wanting to come in and sell their goods and gauge for themselves whether Wayfarers Arcade would be a good long-term fit for them.
