This year’s Sefton Open has seen a record number of entries, ahead of the exciting art exhibition opening in April.

The Sefton Open is an annual exhibition which takes place at The Atkinson, on Lord Street in Southport, celebrating the creativity and artistic talent across the borough.

The exhibition takes over The Atkinson’s art gallery in an eclectic salon-style hang and features a wide variety of works from individual artists and local groups.

Each year the exhibition attracts thousands of visitors to The Atkinson.

This year’s hand-in day for local artists took place earlier this week, with organisers inundated by both the quality and number of works of art submitted.

The difficult process now begins about which works to include in this year’s Sefton Open, which takes place from Saturday 5th April 2025 through to Saturday 31st May 2025.

Admission is free.

A spokesperson for The Atkinson said:

“Sefton Open hand-in day is always a vibrant and exciting occasion, and this year was no exception!

“We were thrilled to see so many talented artists dropping by to submit their incredible works, setting a new record for entries.

“Now, with so many outstanding pieces to consider, it’s time for the judging to begin. Stay tuned for the results!”

The Sefton Open sees The Atkinson’s long standing partner, Southport Palette Club, select the work from individual artists for the exhibition.

The club was formed in 1921 to champion the work of local artists and this will be their 99th annual exhibition.

A wide variety of media is welcomed, including film, sculpture, craft, paintings, prints and textiles. Artists may submit up to 3 original artworks for consideration by the Council of Southport Palette Club.

Visitors to the exhibition can purchase catalogues and are encouraged to vote for their favourite artwork on display. The artwork with the most votes will be awarded The People’s Prize. Visitors can also support local artists by investing in their work, most artworks are available to purchase through The Atkinson and the Own Art Scheme.
