Southport’s first organic whole foods, organic fruit and veg and zero waste shop is urging shoppers to play their part in the campaign against everyday plastic.
OmNom Zero Waste on Wesley Street, in Southport town centre, would love as many people as possible to sign up to the Big Plastic Count 2022.
The business was recognised as a Finalist in the Reshaping Business category in the Southport BID’s 2022 Your Southport Stars Awards which were held at Bliss Hotel in April.
Greenpeace and Everyday Plastic have joined up to run the Big Plastic Count 2022 campaign to get UK households, businesses, schools and community groups counting plastic for one week between 16th May and 22nd May.
The data collected will be a new evidence base of how the UK consumes and deals with plastics, and will be used to show the Government it’s time to commit to targets.
OmNom Zero Waste will be joining fellow indie refill shops across the country to offer anyone who completes the count 10% of their next shop with them.

OmNom Zero Waste will also apply this discount to anything you want in shop, whether you think stocking up on cupboard essentials might be handy, getting some fresh fruit and veg, or finally investing in those sustainable homeware items.
OmNom Zero Waste owner Victoria Hughes said: “The Big Plastic Count is a campaign to encourage people, businesses, schools and community groups to count their plastic waste for one week.
“It is the biggest ever investigation into household plastic which will collect the evidence needed to push the government, supermarkets and companies to tackle the plastic crisis.
“Its aims are to show the Government its time to commit: reduce single plastic use by 50% by 2025 by switching to reusable options that work for everyone – and ban sending our waste to other countries.”
OmNom Zero Waste on Wesley Street is Southport’s organic refill shop and has been open since January 2019.
With over 150 products available in its refill range, the shop provides an alternative grocery shopping experience in the town centre.
Customers can reduce their single-use packaging waste by bringing in their own clean containers or using the reusable paper bags available and refilling from the various dispensers.
The shop also provides organic, seasonal and locally-grown fresh produce along with a range of natural bodycare and sustainable homeware products.
For anyone taking part in the Big Plastic Count, OmNom Zero Waste is offering a 10% discount on your next shop with them.
Once you have submitted your results online, bring in your count sheet between the 23rd-28th May to receive your discount which is applicable across its entire shop range.
Victoria Hughes said: “Refill shops are mostly independently owned and set up by citizens of the local area.
“As a community we all stay in touch and work collaboratively to improve the outcomes across the country in relation to reducing single use plastics and broader environmental issues. Many refill shops across the UK have voluntarily signed up to offer the discount despite the challenges indie retail shops are facing.
“At OmNom we wanted to offer our regular customers an incentive to take part in the count which will provide a vital knowledge base, motivate anyone who has been wanting to shop refill but not managed to get started, and also reconnect with customers who may have drifted back to supermarkets or shopping online as a result of the lockdowns.
“Mostly it’s a way of saying thank you for supporting the planet and us as a small indie business.”
