Children and staff from Monkey Puzzle Nursery with Merseyside Police Officers Dave Jackson and Laura Rowling, having enjoyed World Book Day with Southport College students at Wayfarers Arcade

Wayfarers Arcade in Southport extended an invitation to the children from Monkey Puzzle Nursery to celebrate World Book Day with Senior Tutor Tina Thackery and students from Southport College.

The children arrived in fancy dress for World Book to enjoy a story and song session with students from the Early Years Education Department at the college.

Many of the students’ progress to university to train to be early years teachers or nursery leaders. Southport College has a large and vibrant Early Years Education Department, and storytelling and understanding the role it plays in a young child’s development is an important part of the courses on offer.

Wayfarers Arcade Centre Manager, Yvonne Burns said: “We were happy to host the little fancy-dress characters from Monkey Puzzle Nursery and seeing them enjoy themselves was a real treat. Wayfarers is at the centre of the town and as such we pride ourselves as being central to the community. A big thank you to the talented students from Southport College for entertaining the children so well.”

Michelle Brabner Principal / CEO of Southport College said: “We are delighted to have been part of the World Book Day celebrations in the town’s iconic Wayfarer’s Arcade today.

“Interacting with the children from Monkey Puzzle this morning in such a different setting has been a fantastic experience for our students and we hope the children have enjoyed it too!”

Nursery Director at Monkey Puzzle Nursery, Jayne Hayes said: “A big thank you to Wayfarers and the College. We were so proud and pleased to see our preschool children in such a beautiful setting enjoying this time with the students from Southport College. It was a great success and the children dressed in their World Book Day outfits thought it was amazing!”

Also making a surprise visit on the morning were David Jackson and Laura Rowling, two local Merseyside Police officers who enjoyed spending time with the children.

Wayfarers has been at the centre of Southport shopping for over 120 years and regularly hosts community events within the arcade. If you have an event or wish to entertain in the arcade please contact the Centre Manager, Yvonne Burns yvonne@cppartners.co.uk
