The beautiful Wayfarers Arcade in Southport is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year by being featured in a stunning new book by local artist Ruth Spillane.

Ruth is publishing her work, Southport Illustrated, this Sunday (1st October 2023).

It contains lots of eye-catching images from across Southport created by Ruth, including Wayfarers Arcade on Lord Street.

The landmark site, previously the Leyland Arcade and Burton Arcade, is a striking Grade II listed structure located on the town’s famous boulevard, Lord Street – and is one of the North West’s most celebrated shopping arcades.

The arcade is a near untouched building with the glass dome and Victorian shop fronts below it, creating a shopping arcade.

It first opened in October 1898 with celebrations being planned later this year to mark its 125th birthday.

Ruth Spillane said: “I love walking around Wayfarers Arcade and imagining how it was in years gone by, bustling with people and trade!

“I wanted to capture that feeling. I love drawing the beautiful carvings and designs in the wooden shop fronts.”

Open seven days a week, visitors to Wayfarers Shopping Arcade enjoys a variety of independent shops, cafes and other local businesses set on two floors.

People are invited to enjoy the launch of Ruth Spillane’s Southport Illustrated book at Silcock’s Pier Family Restaurant on the Promenade in Southport between 11am and 1pm on Saturday 7th October 2023.
