The historic Wayfarers Arcade in Southport town centre is proud to announce the unveiling of the Wayfarers Community Piano this summer.

Members of the public are invited to head to the arcade, on Lord Street, for the official unveiling of a beautiful Yamaha baby grand piano gifted to the people of Southport.

This special event will take place from 1.30pm on Sunday 5th July 2026.

The Wayfarers Community Piano will be officially unveiled by Mayor of Sefton Cllr Jen Corcoran, and Southport MP Patrick Hurley and Southport Town Crier Kevin Ruane MBE.

Following the unveiling, visitors can enjoy performances by Southport Piano Academy teachers Joe Bloom, Jon Taylor and Craig Manchester.

The event will also raise funds for Queenscourt Hospice.

The project began with a vision from Claire Kelly and Southport Piano Academy to bring the sound of an acoustic baby grand piano back to one of Southport’s most iconic Victorian landmarks.

Inspired by the arcade’s heritage and this year’s Southport 2026 ‘Elegantly Eccentric’ theme, Claire felt a baby grand piano would be a fitting addition to such a unique setting.

Rather than sell her prestigious Yamaha baby grand piano, Claire chose to gift it to the community.

The piano will provide opportunities for local musicians, schools, choirs, theatre groups, community organisations and charitable events throughout the year.

Wayfarers Arcade has long been a place of culture, creativity and connection. The Community Piano will create a focal point for live music, fundraising and community celebrations, while supporting future cultural events including performances by Southport Young Musicians Competition finalists and Arts Fair weekend performers.

A Wayfarers Arcade spokesperson said: “Claire Kelly, founder of Southport Piano Academy, organiser of Southport Young Musicians and member of the Southport Music Board, has championed local talent through education, concerts, competitions and community initiatives across Southport.

“We thank Claire and Southport Piano Academy for their generosity, vision and commitment in creating what we hope will become a lasting cultural asset for the town.

“Everyone is welcome to join us as we celebrate music, heritage and community in the heart of Southport.”
