A waste disposal company director who oversaw the illegal dumping of rubbish at a former garage site has been hit with a bill totalling more than £8,500.
Anthony Walsh, 52, of Sefton Close, Kirkby, pleaded guilty to 11 separate environmental crimes at Sefton Magistrates’ Court and has to foot the bill for the clean-up costs.
The court heard that waste from multiple clearance and building jobs undertaken by a company called ‘Mr Shift It Limited’ was dumped over the course of five days in March 2021.
The rubbish, including furniture, toys, clothes and building rubble, was left at a site in Seaforth, with footage from CCTV cameras providing evidence to support the prosecution.
Mr Walsh was the sole director of the now dissolved Mr Shift It Limited at the time of the incidents.
It is understood that the waste was generated by clearance and building projects undertaken by Mr Shift It Limited in the Spring of 2021, and then brought to the site on multiple visits.
Councillor Paulette Lappin, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Regulatory, Compliance and Corporate Services, said:
“Flytipping is such a disgusting crime because it is a blight on our borough and something that won’t be tolerated by us.
“What’s even worse in this case is that the illegal dumping of waste was the responsibility of someone who should have known better and I hope this punishment acts as a deterrent.
“It’s also a chance to remind people that if you see flytipping or you have information about someone you know who has illegally dumped their waste you can report it to us and we will take action.”
Magistrates fined Mr Walsh £1,166, he had to pay a victim surcharge of £466, legal costs of £1,105.25 and clean up costs of £6,065 – a total of £8,802.25.
