The volunteers who play such a huge role in making Southport and Ormskirk hospitals run smoothly have been praised for their efforts at this year’s Time To Shine Awards.

Volunteers take on many roles within the Trust, which would struggle to operate effectively without the support they provide.

This year’s Volunteer of the Year Award was won by Lucas Goodwin, a volunteer who is passionate about helping the Trust to improve its services for patients with learning disability and / or autism.

Lucas has helped the Trust by offering staff advice, reviewing vital documentation and encouraging staff to take part in face-to-face training sessions.

A finalist in this category were the A & E Volunteers.

The fabulous and dedicated team of volunteers in the A & E department provide a fantastic and much-needed service to patients.

From serving breakfasts, lunches and evening meals to patients, to carrying out drinks rounds throughout the day, they free up vital time for hard-working medical staff.

Another finalist is Anne Major.

Anne is a kind and devoted volunteer whose role is to provide an extra source of help for discharged patients, giving them a friendly phone call to check in with them when they’re home and make sure they’re doing OK.

Anne signposts patients to appropriate services if they need them to help their recovery in the community.

The volunteers were praised for their efforts alongside members of staff from Southport and Ormskirk hospitals in a glittering ceremony at Formby Golf Resort and Spa.

Individuals and teams from a wide range of areas were celebrated for their “amazing commitment’’ to providing the best possible care for local patients and their families at the 2023 Time to Shine Awards.

It was hosted by Liverpool radio personality Peter Price while sponsors included Vinci Facilities, Hill Dickinson and Weightmans.

Chief Executive Ann Marr OBE said: I have been highly impressed by all of the inspiring nominations we received from colleagues, patients and members of the public and the message I would like to pass on is that you should never underestimate the difference you make to those around you, each and every day.’’
