People looking to gain experience in the hospitality industry and learn new skills and qualifications are invited to consider volunteering at The Old Bakehouse Coffee Shop in Southport.

The friendly venue, on the corner of Manchester and Zetland Street, opened in February and is the hub of  ‘My Mind Matters (Merseyside) CIC.

It provides home-cooked breakfast, brunch and lunch, along with great coffee, cakes and pastries.

Owner Maz Langshaw would love to give opportunities to people of all ages looking to work in a welcoming environment with no pressure.

Volunteers also can develop and become fully barista trained and receive their certifications in L2 Food Hygiene and First Aid Training.

Maz said: “I would love to chat with anyone interested in volunteering.

“I can provide you with experience and a boost for your CV. You can come in and develop your confidence and social skills.

“It’s been a tough few years for young people particularly. Many of them have lost many years of growing up, spending it in isolation as the Covid lockdowns happened. It’s a setback for so many people.

“One volunteer who has been here with me was 10 years old when the lockdowns began – he’s 15 now. Since he’s been volunteering with us his confidence has gone through the roof.

“I would love to see more people join us. I hope to have lots of interest.

“Come in and learn new skills, build confidence, and see if this is something you’d like to do. Come in and have a try.

“The pandemic has affected people in so many ways. They need places like this where they can come in and feel supported and feel they are under no pressure.

“You can do it with hours and days which suit you.

“You can also enjoy barista training which could boost your future career.

“Southport is really developing its hospitality industry, and the future looks exciting. Work is starting on the new Marine Lake Events Centre, while there has been huge investment in venues like The Grand, the Northern Quarter generally,The Garrick.

“There are lots of hospitality opportunities in the years ahead for people with the right skills, talent and experience, and I can help.

“A lot of businesses are driven purely by profit. I’m not. I’m driven by my own life experiences, and my desire to help other people.”
