Diners have expressed their sadness about the closure of the Villaggio Cucina in Southport, saying “a bright light has gone out in Birkdale Village”. 

Owners of the popular pizzeria and trattoria restaurant announced the news today, blaming rising food and energy costs. 

Scores of people have reacted to the news having enjoyed great meals at the venue over the past 12 years it has been open. 

Speaking in the Stand Up For Southport Facebook group, Angela Lewis said: “Absolutely gutted to hear this news today, so very sad that this wonderful restaurant has had to close. We have loved going regularly to Villaggio Cucina for the last 12 years. Lorna and her staff were amazing. The food was superb and the service was brilliant. 

“A bright light has gone out in Birkdale Village.”

Catherine Hay said: “This is so sad, I was just in on Saturday and it was brilliant as usual, hope all the lovely staff are OK and get new jobs, they would be a credit to any employer.”

Peter Hampson said: “Disappointing news indeed. Sadly this is the time of year, immediately post the hoped for Christmas bounce that some hospitality and retail companies are forced to make difficult decisions about future prospects. If you can, get out and support your favourite restaurants, pubs and shops during this normally difficult first quarter.”

Laura Butler said: “Fab restaurant always seemed busy so I’m very sad it’s closed.”

Allan Robinson said: “My favourite Birkdale restaurant!” 

Hannah Thompson said: “Absolutely gutted. Their ragu was to die for.” 

Norman Wallis said: “Very sad news about my favourite and most regular eatery. Good luck to you for the future and I for one and I am sure many others would agree and hope you open up again soon.”

On the Villaggio Cucina Instagram page, Trevor Moors said: “Absolutely gutted. I have so many wonderful memories from there. Please could you share your saffron gnocchi recipe. It was my absolute favourite.”

Croziers of Birkdale said: “We are so sorry to hear this, what a huge loss to the village  we wish all of you out very best.”

Phoebe S said: “This is awful. I’m so sorry to hear this and it’s extremely worrying to think such a great popular place has struggled.”

Tracy Halsall said: “I’m really sad and very sorry to read this. So sorry for all the lovely staff who have lost their jobs .”

Villaggio Cucina has been a popular fixture in Birkdale Village since it opened in 2012. 

Owners have blamed increasing food prices and energy costs for the closure. 

In a statement, they said: “It is with great sadness that we announce the immediate closure of Villaggio Cucina.

“Increased energy prices and soaring food costs have forced us to make this decision.

“We would like to thank all our staff and customers for their support over the last 12 years.”
