Today (Friday 3rd October 2025) is the FINAL day of an extensive public consultation which will influence whether A&E services locally are concentrated at either Southport Hospital or Ormskirk Hospital.

It will see the biggest shake-up of NHS services since Children’s A&E and maternity services were closed at Southport and Adult A&E was closed at Ormskirk over 20 years ago.

People are urged to make your views known while you can: www.yoursayshapingcaretogether.co.uk

Services are currently split across two sites with children’s A&E at Ormskirk Hospital and the adult A&E in Southport.

Public events have been taking place across Southport, Formby and West Lancashire, enabling local residents to share their insights.

The NHS Shaping Care Together Programme aims to find solutions that will provide everyone with safe, high quality urgent and emergency care services, all day, every day.

Last year a number of public events were held to gather views, and one of the main points raised was that it would be better if both A&Es were located on the same hospital site.

The three NHS partners working on the programme are Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, NHS Cheshire and Merseyside Integrated Care Board and NHS Lancashire and South Cumbria Integrated Care Board.

There are many reasons to opt for Southport for clinical, financial and practical reasons.

The Shaping Care Together report shows that the Southport option

  • could be delivered two years faster
  • would cause less disruption to current services during redevelopment
  • would cost significantly less

However, before making any decision, the views of people who use and rely on local NHS services need to be heard and taken into account.

You can have your say on proposals by taking the survey.

The consultation has been running between 4th July and 3rd October 2025.
