The landlords of one of the oldest pubs in Southport have announced their departure as they get ready for an exciting new challenge.
Neil Walsh and Tom Hodgin are leaving The Windmill pub on Seabank Road in Southport town centre with a farewell party planned for 7th November 2026, as they get ready to open the brand new Lord Street Bakery in the former Inn Beer Shop site on Lord Street.
During their time at The Windmill they have won many top awards, including being recognised as a Finalist in the Pub Of The Year category in the Liverpool City Region Tourism Awards.
They have been recognised for transforming the pub’s fortunes with top-quality home-cooked food; community events; their famous roaring log fire; wide choice of real ales and other drinks; and a friendly welcome for customers.
Neil Walsh said: “For nearly eight years Tom and I have had the privilege of being your landlords at one of the oldest and busiest pubs in Southport.
“Over those eight years we’ve poured our heart and soul into the pub and watched it thrive into a true community pub in the heart of Southport.
“But as we get that little bit older we feel it’s time to move on and try new challenges in life; put more time into our home life; our hobbies; and our family.
“We’ve therefore made the decision to leave the pub and pass on the baton to someone who will give it as much care and love that we have, and carry on the history of a pub which has stood for over 150 years.
“As we look to the end of our chapter and the beginning of a new one, we’d like to thank all our staff and customers for the wonderful support and loyalty that they’ve given.
“But we’re not going anywhere just yet. You’ve still got us for a good few months before we say our final goodbye.
“Our final day will be Saturday 7th November 2026 where we will invite all our customers past and present to join us in one final farewell party and to say thank you for not just being our customers but our Windmill family.
“Thank you – and I hope to see you soon.”
Between now and 7th November, over the next three months, it remains business as normal at The Windmill, with all events, opening times, music etc still on.
The brewery which owns the pub is actively looking for new tenants to carry on its operation. Neil Walsh said: “Thanks again for all the lovely and kind comments, it’s fantastic to know how much you have appreciated everything we’ve done.”
Lord Street Bakery is a brand-new independent bakery opening at the northern end of Lord Street.
Whether you’re popping into town for lunch, picking up your favourite pie or pasty, or simply fancy a cheeky slice of cake, they will have plenty of favourites waiting for you.
