An award-winning Southport pub has been named the best pub in Merseyside!
The Windmill pub, on Seabank Road, will now compete with other regional nominees as they compete for the national title.
The Windmill has been shortlisted in the Pub Of The Year category in the Liverpool City Region Tourism Awards for the past two years running.
Two years ago the venue won the Most Inclusive Local Pub Award in the Liverpool Region, in the Northern Enterprise Awards 2021.
The Windmill landlords Neil Walsh and Tom Hodgin said: “Well isn’t this a surprise!
“We have been named Merseyside Pub & Bar of The Year in the National Pub & Bar Awards.
“We’re now off to London in June to receive our award and compete against all the other county winners for the main title.
“The National Pub & Bar awards are the most prestigious awards for the pub and bar industry so it’s a great honour to receive this award.
“As already, thank you to our customers and hard working staff that make it all possible!”
The pub, on Seabank Road in Southport town centre, is one of the oldest in the North West, serving customers since the 1800s. The first records of The Windmill are from about 1833. Originally three fisherman’s cottages, it has expanded over the years.
Neil Walsh and Tom Hodgin were the youngest pub landlords in Southport when they took over the running of the iconic pub, at the age of 26.
They have since established its reputation as a top quality traditional pub with delicious home cooked food – helped by Neil’s background as a professional chef.
They see The Windmill as a real “community hub for Southport”, and have worked hard to stage events such as Christmas fayres as well as encouraging darts, dominoes and other teams.
They have also become a major part of the local community, supporting other local businesses in the area.
