Southport businessman Matt Byrom has raised over £3,500 for the Alzheimer’s Society after he successfully completed the 2025 TCS London Marathon, crossing the finishing line in 5 hours 15 minutes.

Matt took to the iconic 26.2 mile course to support the charity who supports people affected by dementia and funds vital research.

Inspired by his Mother-in-law, Rose Tapper, who was diagnosed with dementia a few years after she retired from nursing in 2010, he knows first hand how the devastating effects of dementia has on your loved ones and how it drastically affects the family.

Matt trained for months leading up to his first marathon. He said:

“I’m very happy to say that I completed the London Marathon. It was such a fantastic day. The crowds and the atmosphere were amazing.

“I completed it a little slower than I anticipated but it was a very hot sunny day, I had a niggling hip injury that saw me in pain from the start and not to mention the awful cramp I got at mile 20.

“But overall I am really happy. I greatly appreciate everyone’s support, and would like to thank those who have donated- it means so much and was definitely a factor that kept me going on the day.

“Rose wasn’t able to be there on the day but her daughters had a flag made and flew it proud around London. She was definitely there in spirit!”

During the after party at The Royal Horse Guards, where they provided those running for the charity with much needed refreshments and sports massage.

The Alzheimer’s Society praised him calling his fundraising effort a “remarkable achievement.”

With donations still coming in Matt has not ruled out doing another marathon. He said:

“I absolutely think I  could complete the course in a quicker time, I just need to recover from this one first! It has been a pleasure to raise money for such a worthwhile cause.”
