Stand Up For Southport Blog by Andrew Brown
What an inspiring night it’s been with Merseyside Police hosting and supporting 18 community groups from across Southport.
They all had a chance to put forward their ideas on the best way to spend a total of £25,000 which had been seized from criminals in our region.
It was fantastic to see Chief Constable Serena Kennedy and Police Commissioner Emily Spurrell speaking about the incredible community spirit and kindness shown by local people during these challenging past few months and their appreciation of the courage of our local police officers.
The Support Southport event took place at Bold Hotel on Lord Street with groups giving a two minute presentation about the schemes they needed funding for followed by a public vote by everyone present about where the majority of the funding should go.
It was superbly hosted by Superintendent Paul Holden who kept everyone engaged throughout the evening.
There was a pleasant surprise for everyone at the end as police announced a minimum of £600 was being presented to each group present, with more for the winners.
Recipients came from across Southport. The benefits will be seen everywhere.
The result of this Support Southport night will be a ‘ripple effect’ with the impact from the funding and also the strong connections made between community leaders and groups creating positive change in so many different ways.
There have been so many selfless, determined, brilliant people all gathered together this evening.
They’re Southport’s real strength.
