A stunning new ‘Canopy of Light’ has been installed above Scarisbrick Avenue, Southport.

The new lighting, which is suspended from existing archways, consists of 23,000 LED bulbs and would stretch for 2.5km if laid out.

Scarisbrick Avenue is a key link between the town’s centre and seafront, and is hotspot of activity within Southport’s night-time economy.

The project was commissioned by Southport BID to improve the aesthetic of the area and to further enhance Southport’s growing reputation as a place filled with vibrant illuminations and lighting displays.

Southport company Illumidex LTD carried out the works, with the installation taking 10 evenings to complete.

The new lighting adds to a portfolio of similar projects funded by the BID, including permanent lighting on Chapel Street, maintenance of the ‘Boulevard of Light’ on Lord Street, and dynamic ambient lighting in the gardens around Lord Street Bandstand.

Through the investment of Southport businesses, the BID also funds a comprehensive range of festive illuminations each year. Over 200,00 additional lights, as well as statement pieces such as The Bear and The Reindeer attract thousands of visitors to the town centre during the holiday season.

Geoff Wareham, Southport BID Director, Southport Pubwatch Chair, and Commercial Director at Mikhail Hotel and Leisure Group, said:

“Scarisbrick Avenue is home to a thriving business community. The new lights will only emphasise this, drawing more people into the area.

The illuminations will certainly add to the experience of those visiting our brilliant night-time economy venues such as Spender’s Bar and The Avenue.

Similar projects have also shown to have a positive causal effect on safety and security.

There has already been some extremely positive feedback from nearby businesses, and we are looking forward to seeing people enjoying their time beneath the ‘Canopy of Light’.
