Spring is a time when many people look for new ways to get involved in their local community — and across Southport and Formby, there are plenty of opportunities to do just that. Organisations throughout the area are searching for volunteers this season, with roles to suit a wide range of interests, skills and availability.
From supporting community events and helping local charities to caring for outdoor spaces or offering companionship, there are many ways to make a meaningful difference.

Litter Pick – King’s Gardens – Part of the A Million Acts of Hope Campaign
Tuesday 19th May 2026
10am – 12pm
This event is part of the A Million Acts of Hope campaign, a UK-wide campaign (May 13–20, 2026) uniting charities, faith groups, and communities to counter social division by celebrating everyday kindness and solidarity. Join us for a litter pick around Southport’s iconic King’s Gardens and make a difference to your local community. We will provide litter picks and gloves.
Shop Volunteers – Oxfam Formby
Oxfam Formby are looking for more volunteers to help them in their shop. The charity offers volunteers the chance to explore a variety of roles before finding the one that suits them best. Opportunities include becoming a Retail Volunteer or Stock Volunteer, while those looking for something more specialised could consider positions such as an E-commerce Volunteer, Shift Lead Volunteer or Stock Specialist Volunteer.
Whatever your skills or interests, there is something for everyone.
Gardening Volunteers – Friends of Rotten Row
The herbaceous border at Rotten Row is maintained by Volunteers and this vital group are looking for more volunteers to join them.
The friendly group welcomes new members, with no experience needed and tools provided. Work sessions take place on Mondays and Thursdays from 10am to 3pm, with volunteers invited to drop in for an hour or stay for the full session. Each day ends with tea and homemade cake, while helping preserve an award-winning part of Southport’s heritage.
Warehouse and Shop Volunteers – British Heart Foundation
The British Heart Foundation on Lord Street are looking for volunteers to help in a number of different including admin and telephone support, stock processing, warehouse, cleaning, customer service and fundraising. Volunteering with the British Heart Foundation can be a great way to gain experience and enhance your CV. They also take on volunteers from the age of 16.
Ainsdale Lunch and Leisure are looking for volunteers to help in the kitchen and their charity shop. Ainsdale Lunch and Leisure is a non-profit organisation supporting the local community through nutritious home-cooked meals and activities that promote physical and mental wellbeing. Its community café and luncheon club provide welcoming spaces where people can enjoy good food and social connection.
