Southport’s Strongest contest sees athletes from all over UK competing for trophies

Athletes from around the UK travelled to Southport at the weekend – as they fought to prove who was the strongest in a Strongman By The Sea contest. 

Southport’s Strongest Novice & Inters strongman competition took place on Sunday (5th September) at CTC Fitness on Kensington Industrial Estate on Hall Street in Southport.

Challenges included: pulling a truck; lifting a car; picking up huge boulders; and more.

A total of 31 athletes from around the country arrived at the venue before battling it out across five different gruelling events.

These were, in order:

  1. Fingals Finger

Lifting and flipping a 12 inch round steel pole as many times as possible in 60 seconds. The pole weighed 70kg for the women and 110kg for the men.

  1. Press Medley 

Picking up various bars from the floor and pressing them overhead. These included an Olympic weight bar, 60mm axle bar and a 13inch diameter strongman log.

  1. Truck pull 

Athletes are harnessed to a truck and they have 60 seconds to pull the truck over a 20 metre course, the Rileys truck was 14 tonnes. 

  1. Car deadlift 

Athletes have 60 seconds to lift the rear of a car up as many times as possible.

  1. Atlas Stones  

The competition concluded with Athletes lifting atlas stones over a bar set at 51 inches, women lifting 60kg, men lifting 100  and 110kg.

There were three categories competing on the day: Women’s Novice, Men’s Novice and Mens Inters. Novice is entry level competing and Intermediate is the next step up after Novice.

Event organiser Stuart Scott said: “This was a superb day of competing with all athletes giving it their all to try and  get on the podium. 

“There were amazing displays of strength from all athletes and the spirit of the day, both between athletes and spectators, was high!

“There were a couple of hundred spectators during the day, all adding to the amazing atmosphere. 

“We had some amazing local business sponsors on board which helped make the event a success.

“Rileys Removals, a great local removal firm, which sponsored and provided  the trucks.

“Dynamiks Nutrition, a local supplement company which provided prizes for all the podium athletes.

“Alex Scott Ltd, a Southport based gas engineer and plumbing company which sponsored and provided the Fingals Finger for the competition. 

“The Mob Club,  a local gents barber which provided prizes for all men’s podium athletes.
