Poutine from Down And Oot in Southport Market

Southport’s first ever Canadian eatery is about to open inside the new look Southport Market.

Down And Oot will offer delicacies including Canada’s national dish, which promises to become a real cult favourite locally.

Poutine consists of crispy skin-on fries, hot stringy cheese curds with Down And Oot’s special Poutine gravy, with a choice of other toppings – including lobster or steak!

It may sound unusual – but people who have enjoyed it before will know how, strangely, it works!

Down And Oot is the brainchild of successful local businessman Ross Perkins, one of several local people who are operating outlets in Southport’s newest attraction.

Visitors to Southport Market can try out cuisines from around the world including Canadian, Mexican, British, Portugese, Greek, American, Pacific and others when it opens at 10am today (Thursday, 22nd July).

Ross Perkins is looking forward to seeing what people make of Doon And Oot.

The venue has an exciting menu which will appeal to people throughout the day.

There is a large selection of breakfasts available, which include: Classic Canadian Breakfast (smoked sausage patty, griddled potato hash, two fried eggs, thick maple cured bacon and rye toast); Vegetarian Canadian Breakfast (two fried eggs, griddled potato hash, vegetarian sausages, buttered mushrooms, griddled tomato, rye toast); or if you’re feeling hungry, Lumberjack Special (fried Canadian minute steak, smoked sausage patty, griddled potato hash, two fried eggs, buttered mushrooms, griddled tomato, two fluffy maple syrup pancakes).

Other breakfast specials include: Jimmy’s Pancake Special; Avo & Chilli on Rye; Smoked Salmon on Rye; Fresh Fruit Pancake Stack; and Sweet French Toast.

Canada is famous for its steaks, and Down And Oot will offer Canadian Strip Steak, 8oz Rump Steak and Crunchy Fried Steak.

Other dishes include: variations of Eggs Benedict, and hot sandwiches including Steak Canadienne and Nova Scotia Lobster and Crab Roll.

There are five varieties of Poutine you can try – with toppings including crispy maple bacon pieces, wild mushrooms, Montreal-spice steak and lobster.

Ross Perkins has a proud history in Southport, having operated a number of successful hospitality businesses including: Underground, Starskys, Kahiki, Glasshouse and Old Bank. His current business is a hospitality recruitment firm, Burn Everything.

He enjoys a passion for great food and always keeps a keen eye on the latest food trends happening in London and elsewhere. He believes Canadian food and its national dish of Poutine are about to become a real hit in the UK.

He said: “Working in my current job, at lots of festivals and other events, I saw some great food out there, which ignited my passion to open Down And Oot.

“I have not been to Canada yet, but I knew that Canadian food would be a really good offering. I see what goes on in London in terms of the latest food trends, and really wanted to bring something great back here.

“We are using all local produce to prepare our dishes. This is going to be something really special for Southport.

“The new Southport Market is fantastic for the area. We really needed this to happen!

“It is amazing to be able to be at the forefront of this.”
