Southport Rugby Club junior player Joseph

Southport Rugby Club will hold a minute’s silence and collect donations for Claire House Children’s Hospice after the tragic death of one of their junior players.

They will also seek to organise an annual memorial rugby match between Southport and Thatto Heath.

A Southport Rugby Club spokesperson said: “It’s with a heavy heart we share this with you.

“Many of you already know, but a couple of weeks ago one of our former mini players sadly passed away.

“Joseph stopped playing rugby at Southport after a brain tumour was discovered in 2022.

“During Joseph’s treatment he played some rugby league at Thatto Heath.

“For those that remember Joseph, he was a big lad, and a great rugby player – our under 7’s Player of the year!

“Under 9s coach, Dave Snape is planning to organise an annual fixture against Thatto Heath where we play both codes of rugby and remember our team mate.

“In addition to this, the U9s alongside our senior players will be collecting donations at the end of season awards day on 12th May to donate to Claire House, who supported the family during Joseph’s treatment.

“We are all devastated with this news. Our thoughts are with Joseph’s, family, friends, and team mates.

“A minute’s silence will be held before the game against Ripon on Saturday.”
