With miles of sandy coastline, Victorian parks and one of Britain’s oldest piers, Southport has long been a favourite destination for a seaside escape.
Now, new research from Tails.com has found it’s also one of the UK’s very best places to enjoy a day out with your dog, securing fourth place overall in a nationwide ranking.
The team at Tails.com analysed towns, cities and boroughs across ten different factors, including dog-friendly walking routes, restaurants, cafes, attractions, green spaces and practical amenities to uncover the UK’s ultimate dog-friendly day out.

- Bath – 49.36
- Chester – 42.74
- Southport – 41.90
- Hampstead – 41.24
- Richmond – 39.27
- Windsor – 36.69
- Llandudno – 35.74

Southport’s fourth-place finish was driven by its strong all-round offering for dog owners. The seaside town recorded 50 dog-friendly restaurants, 18 cafes, 44 walking routes and 6 nearby beaches, giving owners plenty of opportunities to enjoy everything from coastal strolls to lunch by the sea without leaving their dog behind.
Only York, Bath and Chester ranked higher overall. York claimed first thanks to its study-leading 98 dog-friendly restaurants, alongside 43 cafes, 57 walking routes, 19 veterinary practices and 3 nearby dog-friendly National Trust sites.
Bath followed in second thanks to its impressive mix of 60 walking routes, 65 dog-friendly restaurants, 20 veterinary practices and 13 green spaces, while Chester secured third after recording 50 dog-friendly restaurants, 20 cafes, 10 pet shops and a strong selection of historic walking routes and riverside attractions.

“A successful day out with your dog starts before you even leave the house. Make sure you’ve packed the essentials, including fresh water, a portable bowl, poo bags, a lead and enough of their usual food if you’ll be away over mealtimes.
